What led you to pursue certification through the National Institute of Accounting Technicians?

“What led me to pursue certification through the National Institute of Accounting Technicians (NIAT) was a very personal turning point in my journey. After failing my 4th and 5th CPA board exams in 2015, I went through a period of feeling down and discouraged.

It was a difficult time where I questioned my abilities and my future in the profession. However, instead of giving up, I decided to channel that disappointment into something constructive, to rebuild my confidence and strengthen my foundation as an accounting professional.

That was when I turned to NIAT certifications. In 2016, I took the challenge of pursuing the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT®) program and passed Level 1, which gave me a renewed sense of hope and motivation. Building on that momentum, I went on to complete Level 3 in 2017 and Level 2 in 2018.”

How did earning your certification from NIAT impact your career opportunities or confidence in the field?

“Earning my certification from NIAT had a profound impact on both my career opportunities and my confidence as an accounting professional. At a time when I needed to rebuild myself and regain my belief in my own capabilities, passing the NIAT exams gave me the validation that I could still excel and grow in the field. It restored my confidence, reminded me of my strengths, and pushed me to keep striving for greater goals.

Professionally, the certification opened new doors of opportunities. It expanded my potential within the accounting field by giving me a stronger credential that is recognized by the industry. It allowed me to enhance my teaching in the academe, because I could share not only technical knowledge but also my personal journey of resilience and professional growth. This has been particularly meaningful, as my students see me not just as their teacher but also as someone who has overcome setbacks and continued to pursue excellence.”

What advice would you give to aspiring accounting professionals who are considering NIAT certification?

“My advice to aspiring accounting professionals who are considering NIAT certification is to see it as both an investment in themselves and a stepping stone toward broader opportunities. Taking the NIAT certifications is not just about earning a title, it’s about committing to continuous professional development, which is vital in a field that is constantly evolving. By pursuing these certifications, you gain additional credentials that can set you apart and make you more competitive in the industry.

At the same time, NIAT certifications can open doors for career growth, whether in practice, education, or other finance-related fields. They demonstrate your commitment to learning and your determination to strengthen your expertise.”

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a member of NIAT?

“My advice to someone considering becoming a member of NIAT is to definitely take advantage of the opportunity, because membership goes far beyond simply holding a title, it offers real, tangible benefits that can support your career growth. In my almost nine years as an active NIAT member, I’ve experienced firsthand how enriching it can be.

For instance, I was able to widen my professional network by participating in events such as the Bookkeepers Summit and the Accounting Technician Congress. These gatherings, whether face-to-face in the past or online today, provide an excellent platform to connect with fellow practitioners, exchange ideas, and learn from experts in the field.
