Motivation to pursue NIAT certification
“I decided to pursue certification through the National Institute of Accounting Technicians (NIAT) because I wanted to strengthen my foundation and gain a professional credential that would validate my skills. After transitioning from BS Accountancy to BSAIS, I felt the need to prove to myself that I could still excel in the accounting field.
NIAT offered a pathway that was both practical and recognized, giving me the chance to apply what I learned in school to a standard that employers and professionals respect. What attracted me most was how NIAT certifications focus on real-world applications, not just theory. It was an opportunity to show that despite setbacks, I was committed to continuous learning and building credibility in my chosen career.”
Impact on opportunities and confidence
“Earning my NIAT certification gave me a tremendous boost in both confidence and career opportunities. Before I got certified, I sometimes felt overshadowed by doubts, especially after facing setbacks in my academic journey. But when I became a Certified Accounting Technician Level 1 – Certified Bookkeeper, it gave me proof that my knowledge and skills met a professional standard.
It became a credential I could proudly put on my résumé, and it showed employers that I was serious about my profession. The certification gave me an edge when applying for roles, and it reassured me that I was on the right path. More than that, it reminded me that I was capable of overcoming challenges, that even when the road changes, there are still ways to achieve success and recognition in this field.”
Advice to aspiring professionals considering NIAT certification
“My advice to aspiring professionals considering NIAT certification is simple, go for it. Don’t think of certification as just another credential to add to your résumé, think of it as an investment in yourself. The process may feel intimidating at first, but it is designed to help you gain practical knowledge and validate your skills. For those who, like me, may have faced setbacks or redirections in their academic journey, NIAT can be a confidence builder. It shows that success is not limited to one straight path.
My tip is to prepare well, make use of available study materials, and take the process seriously. Most importantly, believe in yourself. The certification is not just about passing an exam, it’s about proving to yourself that you are capable of growth, resilience, and professionalism.”
Advice to prospective NIAT members
“Becoming a member of NIAT opens doors to a professional community that values growth and excellence. My advice is to see membership as more than just a title, see it as an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, gain access to resources, and be part of an organization that supports accounting technicians in their journey.
Membership gives you a sense of belonging to a recognized professional body, which can help in building confidence and credibility in the workplace. If you’re considering joining, I encourage you to take advantage of the networking opportunities, trainings, and certifications that NIAT offers. Membership is not just about what you receive, but also about how you grow with the organization and contribute to raising the standards of the profession.”
Certification received
“From NIAT, I received my Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Level 1 – Certified Bookkeeper certification. This credential means a lot to me because it represents both knowledge and resilience. It validated my ability to handle bookkeeping and accounting tasks to a recognized standard, and it gave me the confidence to move forward in my career.
More than just a title, this certification is a reminder of my journey, from doubting myself after not qualifying for Accountancy, to rediscovering my spark for learning, and finally earning a credential that proves I belong in this field. It’s a milestone that reminds me of how far I’ve come and how much further I can still go. Looking ahead, I am eager to pursue Level 2 and Level 3 of the CAT program, because I believe every step forward brings me closer to becoming the professional, I aspire to be.
For me, these certifications are not just about advancing my career, but about embracing lifelong learning and proving that with perseverance, growth never stops.”
